Mould And How To Get Rid Of Mould

Causes of Mould on the Walls and Ceilings – How to Get Rid Of Mould Growth | Guide for Beginners

If you live in Northern NSW or SE Qld – No doubt you are battling with mould in some way.
After the wettest summer and 3 lots of flooding, our homes and businesses have water damage and have had to cope with wet conditions that have not being experienced before.

Moulds are a part of the natural environment. Outdoors, moulds play a role in nature by breaking down dead organic material such as fallen leaves and dead trees, but mould growth should be avoided indoors. Moulds reproduce through tiny spores that are invisible to the naked eye and float in outdoor and indoor air. Mould can grow indoors when mould spores land on damp surfaces. There are many types of moulds, and none of them grows without water or moisture.
The mould problem is especially pronounced in humid areas or areas subject to flooding. After flooding mould remediation is a big part of the cleanup that is required.

What is mould, anyway?

The term mould refers to various fungi types that choose food and places with high humidity as their preferred places to grow. The most common places where mould occurs are walls and ceilings in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and window frames, especially in poorly ventilated parts of the home.

How do I get rid of mould?

It is impossible to eliminate all mould and mould spores indoors; some mould spores are found in the air and in household dust. If moisture isn’t there, mould spores can’t grow. Mould growth should be prevented or controlled by controlling indoor humidity. If mould is present in your home, you must eliminate the mould and correct the water problem. If you remove the mould but do not fix the water problem, the mould problem will most likely reoccur.

Now that you know what is causing the problem, you can prevent mouldy ceilings and walls by taking the necessary precautions.

Prevent mould growth on ceilings and walls by doing the following:

  • Conduct regular home inspections, especially if you live in a rental property, as mould could be an issue during a routine inspection
  • Have your air conditioners cleaned and treated for mould every year
  • Check pipes and gutters and make repairs promptly if you notice water damage on ceilings
  • Schedule frequent and thorough cleanings or consider hiring a professional cleaner;
  • Improve ventilation; and keep air moving around the home
  • Avoid drying linens, towels and the like indoors;
  • Throw away mouldy food and other infested items as soon as possible.

Mould remediation

Mould removal from ceilings and walls is a difficult task and requires perseverance. In most cases, a one-time cleaning is not enough. It would greatly help if you had the right products and the right equipment.

Tools you need to remove mould:

  • Rubber gloves
  • mask
  • sponge
  • goggles
  • spray bottle
  • Bucket with water

Once you have the equipment on, it is time to act. You can try different mould removal methods, but always try to choose the most effective and least dangerous way.

  • One way to remove mould is by using chemicals that can cause various health problems.
  • Another option is to use environmentally friendly mould removers.
  • There are also alternative cleaning methods. White vinegar, baking soda, essential oils and similar products are available here. Each by itself has the potential to eliminate fungal colonies, but together they are even more effective. Simply add and mix two parts white vinegar with one part water. Then, a spoonful or two of baking soda and a few drops of tea tree oil should be added. There might be some foaming when the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, so use a larger container as a precaution.
  • You can also replace the tea tree oil with clove oil, which also works well against mould.

After spraying the solution, let it soak in. You can always rinse with water if you find the smell too strong. However, these are natural products that will dissipate faster in the fresh air than chemical products.
